Foriegn policy goes fishing

If ever the United States of America has needed a clear set of foreign policy objectives, it is now. As the world witnessed in Quebec last week, many citizens of the world are not sold on the benefits of free trade. Conversely, we also saw that most oft he Western Hemisphere’s political leaders are. In many respects, there seems to be little doubt than an integrated hemispheric (and eventually world) economy with few trade barriers will be the result of the increasing power and prevalence of multi-national corporations, non-governmental organizations, and inter-governmental organizations.

"What do you mean, 'crazy'" Asima laughs at my word choice, and then pelts me with questions about the incongruities of American diction and slang. "You say 'crazy' and it means so many different things. Also, 'slick.' What does that mean? None of these words mean the same here as they did in my English classes. Like 'cool' ? people don't use it to mean cold!" She looks at me inquisitively, automatically adjusting her cranberry colored headscarf, and then her face erupts into a smile.

As a college student whose daily diet consists of Taco Bell, frozen food entrees, grilled delights from the student union, and candy, I sometimes worry that I may develop a brain tumor or colon cancer from eating all of those preservatives, artificial sweeteners, flavors, and colors, pesticide residues, and other synthetic substances that my diet has in abundance. When the holidays roll around, though, I breathe a sigh of relief at the prospect of eating healthy meals for a while.
World immigration standards need to change

For a few minutes please forget about what we see in the media. Forget about that nonsense axis and all the other issues that "our leaders" tell us that they are important. Stop for a few minutes and look south, to the south of our world. Picture Africans swimming in the strait of Gibraltar, South Americans banging pots and pans, Cubans who die in the Caribbean every other day and lonely Mexican women running through the Arizona desert.

Confucius: A part of Chinese history

When one thinks of China, many negative images come to mind. Tiennaman Square, human rights violations, Tibet. However, I choose to focus on a positive person in Chinese history- Confucius. Confucius’ philosophy and wisdom greatly influenced ancient and modern China, helping many people learn about nature, the world around them, and their relationships with others. His teachings also helped the Chinese government to rule the country successfully.
