Siesta. A time to think, to reflect, to slow down, to relax . . . moreover, a time to simply breathe. When I first arrived in Spain, I wasn’t aware how deeply ingrained siestas were in the Spanish culture. I had heard the term before, but never considered it a practiced tradition in any country. I quickly learned that in the south of Spain, a siesta was not only a tradition, but a daily ritual. At exactly 2:00 every day, the stores pulled down their chain-link barriers, offering a sign that the siesta was approaching.

"What do you mean, 'crazy'" Asima laughs at my word choice, and then pelts me with questions about the incongruities of American diction and slang. "You say 'crazy' and it means so many different things. Also, 'slick.' What does that mean? None of these words mean the same here as they did in my English classes. Like 'cool' ? people don't use it to mean cold!" She looks at me inquisitively, automatically adjusting her cranberry colored headscarf, and then her face erupts into a smile.

I use modern mantra in this column. A modern mantra consists of a simple phrase or a couple of words that are meant to help one get through the day or a particular situation. You probably already use these without knowing it.

The evil pretzel never left Mr. Bush's throat, but rather decided to twist around when he was speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. Mr. Bush said he had talked about "devaluation" with Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in a previous meeting. As always the "less ignorant ones" (Mr. Bush's staff) later clarified that Georgie had made a mistake: he meant to say deflation instead of devaluation.
Government denies Umatilla disaster

Suddenly, Tony Kimball was choking to death.
A split second earlier he had been seated on a toolbox, reaching for the instrument tray while his coworkers hammered, welded and grinded through steel, cement and iron. But all the while a silent predator was stalking and, when it attacked, it came from everywhere, hushing the construction sight in a moment and arresting Kimball's hand in mid-reach.
