Finding Spain: No stone is without a story
by: Hank Smith - printed on 02-28-2001
España . . . España . . . ESPAÑA! It hit me when I heard these words from Carmela, the lead character in a Spanish play set during its civil war of 1936-1939. España…Spain, for some reason, took on a greater amount of significance. Carmela, in fact, was saying these words to foreigners, members of the International Brigade, those soldiers that came from around the world to defend Spain’s republic from a fascist threat.
Minority Nations in UK Don’t Need Unity
by: Chris Costello - printed on 11-15-2000
The United Kingdom’s principle island of Britain is composed of England, Scotland and Wales. Scotland, with a population of 5 million, and Wales, with roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, are known as the UK’s minority nations. With such discrepancies in population, one ponders whether these minority nations can fully express themselves within the UK.

The plane left from London at one in the morning, so before the storm hit there hadn’t been much talking going on, just sleeping sounds and the occasional hiss of a pop can or flight attendant’s beep.

Suddenly, Tony Kimball was choking to death.
A split second earlier he had been seated on a toolbox, reaching for the instrument tray while his coworkers hammered, welded and grinded through steel, cement and iron. But all the while a silent predator was stalking and, when it attacked, it came from everywhere, hushing the construction sight in a moment and arresting Kimball's hand in mid-reach.
Debunking the feminist myth
by: Christy Scheuer - printed on 09-25-2002
Feminism. Oh, the difference a word can make! The word feminism is fraught with negative implications, obscured by layers of stereotypes. Many people hesitate to call themselves feminists for fear of others’ scorn and derision.
