Corrupt Politicians Ruining Indians’ Freedom
by: Kunal Nayyar - printed on 11-15-2000
My native country is India. I take great pride in being an Indian. The British ruled India for more than 200 years and it was not until 50 years ago that we got our independence. Mahatma Gandhi, Mahatma means great spirit, was one man who was supported by the poor and lower class people of India. With their support he drove out the British and brought India freedom. He alone, without any violence, without lifting a finger made the British leave.
The Giant of Africa Comes Up Short
by: Anu and Tomi Oladele - printed on 01-31-2001
After 40 years of independence under alternating military and civilian regimes, where does Nigeria stand today? Wonder with me…
A great oil boom in the 1970’s exposed Nigeria’s abundance of natural resources, especially hydrocarbons. She was the top oil producing country in Africa and among the top five oil producers in the world. Because of this, the Nigerian economy was completely dependent on its oil sector, which continuously supplied 95% of its foreign exchange for two decades.

The function of terrorism is to place its survivors in a state of continuing fear and self-monitoring. To bring about this state of affairs, the terrorist act must be both specifically targeted and randomly executed.
The U.S. flies solo in Iran
by: Casey O'Connor - printed on 02-06-2002
President Bush, in his recent State of the Union address, grouped Iran with Iraq and North Korea in what he termed an "axis of evil." He has since kept up his hard line rhetoric, stating that the three countries have been "put on notice." Putting Iran in the same category as Iraq and North Korea is seen by many in the international community as rather extreme and based on shaky evidence. European countries fear that such a confrontational stance toward Iran will be counter-productive and may inhibit recent moves toward liberalization and reform within the strategically significant Middle Eastern state.
Deforestation, our two-faced friend
by: Nicole Ulacky - printed on 10-10-2001
The snowball of events that has caused our current planetary environmental condition was started long ago. It has been handed down, generation to generation, only to grow with each successive passing. We can thank our parents and grandparents, and grandparents’ grandparents, and all of those before them, for throwing us into a phase of environmental degradation that is nearly unfixable. To say the least, the environmental problem facing our generation is of enormous proportion.
Visiting The Bird Parliament
by: Mono Vergara - printed on 09-25-2002
Fellow sailors, It was in an island a few minutes from Portland, the city we fail to leave because we are scared to give up our comforts and the way fake paintings look over the scars of the walls. I thought I could share this with you. You are probably used to my political columns, but this is more political than what you think...
