Be conscience of your future, the environment

Have you ever written a paper about a penny? Back in the days of Junior High school, my teacher gave us that assignment. One day in eighth grade Mr. Hoepner handed out old pennies to each person in the class and asked us to write about where that penny had been in its little penny life. All of this was to be done in three pages written in cursive and due in a week (how quickly those days go by!).
Finding the Columbia River

"I've known rivers, ancient, dusky rivers, my soul has grown deep like the rivers." The great Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes wrote these lines while aboard a train. He was on his way to Mexico to visit his dad. The poet, who had just finished high school, "grew deep like the rivers" as he crossed the Mississippi, and thought about a people whose memories stretched across the Nile, the Congo, and the Euphrates.
Chimpanzees and compassion

Jane Goodall, the famous Chimpanzee reseacher and founder of the “Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation,” was in New York when two planes flew into the World Trade Center.
So when Goodall stood up to lecture at the University of Portland on Saturday, September 22, she spoke not only of love and concern for her chimpanzees, but of her compassion for the human species as well.
Argentina: More than an economic crisis

I would like to explain, from an Argentinean point of view, what is really happening in my home country and why. Throughout my entire life, the country?s economy has had its ups and downs, currency devaluations, and many corrupt political leaders. Today?s economic crisis in Argentina is by far one of the most serious I have seen. It is sad to know that the only way Argentina makes into the news is because the country is falling apart and not because it is a beautiful place.
Who’s afraid of feminism?

Feminism causes great fear. Just the mention of the word can send many people ducking for cover. Even more fear is caused when this word is spoken to males. We often respond in a variety of ways: laughter, disgust, and anger. Besides being fundamentally annoying to those who believe and profess feminism, I think this common response hurts men as well.
A quick fix denied

Last Thursday the U.S. Senate voted against opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to drilling for oil and gas. It was a victory for both Democratic Senators and Americans Environmentalists, but for President Bush and the Oil lobbyists the defeat was a blow to their hopes of including this proposal in future energy legislation.
