My views on US military and foreign policy changed drastically one January day in 1989. I was travelling on a delegation to Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala with 20 students from my college and we woke up that morning in a hotel room in Guatemala City. After breakfast we boarded a bus and traveled through the Guatemalan countryside to the tiny village of Poaquil, San Jose where a series of “disappearances” had reportedly just taken place.

Dear Uncle Sam: I am writing in regards to the war being fought against terrorism. My wish is for you, the federal government, to let me help protect our country from other acts of hatred. The protection I need may only be secured through armament. For this reason, each and every American citizen should be sent a gun through the mail as soon as possible. I have discovered a disturbing trend among seniors here at UP: we have no idea what we want to do next year! When we were seniors in high school the decision for us was simpler - college or a job. Now we must decide what our four years here on the bluff have prepared us to do with our lives. Sure we say we are a nursing/business/biology/social work/theology/theatre or whatever major. But what does that mean for our lives? If you haven?t noticed, the economy and the job market are pretty darn pathetic right now.

Some of my buddies from back home got together last weekend. I wasn’t able to be there, so one of these old friends asked another, whom I currently live with, how I was doin’ and what I was up to. My housemate’s response included my plans to return to the School of the America’s protest in Georgia, my nagging efforts regarding recycling around the house and my general anti-“corporate America” attitude.

It was the father of the current US President who, in the early nineties, proclaimed the beginning of a new world order. Today, George Bush Jr. seems determined to back up those words with actions. Since singling out Iraq, Iran, and North Korea as the ?axis of evil? during his state of the union address, the world has become increasingly concerned about this superpower engaging in a policy of self-justice.
Japanese pretzles

The evil pretzel never left Mr. Bush's throat, but rather decided to twist around when he was speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. Mr. Bush said he had talked about "devaluation" with Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in a previous meeting. As always the "less ignorant ones" (Mr. Bush's staff) later clarified that Georgie had made a mistake: he meant to say deflation instead of devaluation.
