"Game's on midfield. João Marcos picks up the ball, makes a long pass to Roberto Carlos on the left. Roberto Carlos runs to the corner line, two defenders try to follow him, he crosses the ball over to the penalty line, Ronaldo picks it up, dribbles one, dribbles two, clears the view, heads up, he shoots? GOAALLL!!! On the far right on the net, indefensible for the goalie, completely out of reach.

My morning bicycle ride to the University of Portland is one of the few times in the day that I feel good, truly and deeply good, about what I am doing. In our lives, so many of our decisions and actions involve trade-offs. To keep the apartment warm we have to turn up the heat and burn more energy. To learn more about an important subject, we print out an article, using a few more sheets of paper.

Dear Uncle Sam: I am writing in regards to the war being fought against terrorism. My wish is for you, the federal government, to let me help protect our country from other acts of hatred. The protection I need may only be secured through armament. For this reason, each and every American citizen should be sent a gun through the mail as soon as possible. That's right, the American public needs to pack some heat.
Jose Bove fights the Mc-Domination of the world

This past summer in France, a mustachioed, pipe-smoking sheep farmer held the French’s regard in the headlines of Le Monde, with the attention usually reserved for soccer heroes: his name was Jose Bove. In August of 1999, Jose led a group attack on the McDonald’s near his farm in the south of France. His trial, held this summer, drew a crowd of over 15,000 people, and Bove commanded a following of thousands more.

At first glance, he is an intimidating tower, hovering over you at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches. This looming impression is swiftly shattered by a disarming and warmhearted smile. His name is Ghislain-Giles Sema or “Sema” for short. Sema’s mild manner contradicts his imposing exterior, though he is no softy. He is presently a forward on the UP men’s basketball team and when asked a question, he is nothing but forthright and direct in his answers.
Corporate world different from reservation

I walk to the “bus barn” and hear the snow crunch beneath my feet. As the cold crisp South Dakota air touches my face, I feel alive and ready to begin the day. After fifteen minutes of warming up the school bus, I embark on my route, which will bring 65 children to school in one of the most remotely isolated places in the country, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. As I make my way across the reservation, the rising sun glistens off the morning frost that blankets these beautiful hills, and once again, I’m reminded that I’m privileged to be here.
