VITW Stands Against Iraqi Sanctions

On Monday, November 11 the University of Portland Offices of Volunteer Services and Campus Ministry will host peace activists from the group Voices in the Wilderness. The group’s mission is to end United Nations economic sanctions currently imposed on Iraq (which have been in place for a decade, since the Gulf War). This is a valuable opportunity for the campus community to study and reflect on a critical issue involving ethics, US foreign policy, nonviolence, military dictatorhips and human rights, the merits of various ways to influence public policy, and more.

It was 9:15 on Friday morning and I was on my way to logic. I was traveling by foot on one of the many cement pathways that lead the majority of us to our places of thought, learning, confusion, or whatever one would classify exactly how we spend our days on the bluff. Since I was getting closer and closer to being late for the first class of the day I decided to veer off from the normal flow of traffic and blaze a trail of my own through the freshly manicured grass that lies between Mago and Franz.
Are the two Koreas ready to shake hands?

Korea is the only country that is divided into two different governments, economic systems, cultures, and militaries. It was portioned along the 38th parallel, with the Soviet Union occupying the north area and American troops occupying the south area ever since it was independent from Japan in 1945. The North and South fought a fierce war from 1950 to 1953 and have never singed a permanent peace treaty.

International Students at University of Portland who watched the presidential debates in the Cove the last couple of weeks must have felt they were at a Ping-Pong match. Maybe they wonder how the United States figures they can accurately and fairly represent the majority of American's with just two political parties. The ball is going back and forth between two people while millions sit back passively and watch until it is time to stand in line and pick one or the other.
